In Path of Exile, every piece of equipment can have up to six sockets. Each socket can be colored Red, Green, or Blue, corresponding to the three core attributes: Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence. The color of a socket determines which skill gems you can place in it, making socket colors a critical part of any PoE build.

When you use a Chromatic Orb on an item, the game rolls each socket independently. The probability of getting a specific color depends on the item's stat requirements. An item that requires 150 Strength and 0 Dexterity will heavily favor red sockets, making off-color sockets (green or blue on that item) much harder to obtain. How Socket Color Probability Works

The PoE socket color formula is straightforward: for each socket, the chance of rolling a specific color equals (attribute + 10) / (total_attributes + 30). If an item has no stat requirements at all, each color has an equal one-third chance. Items with mixed requirements (like Strength/Intelligence hybrid armor) will have two favored socket colors and one off-color, making calculations more nuanced.

For example, a pure Strength chest piece with 180 STR requirement gives each socket a roughly 86% chance of rolling red, 4.5% green, and 4.5% blue. Getting six off-color blue sockets on such an item would cost thousands of Chromatic Orbs on average — and that's exactly the kind of scenario where the Crafting Bench method at the Artisan's Bench becomes dramatically cheaper.

Chromatic Orb vs. Crafting Bench

Players have two main approaches to recoloring sockets in Path of Exile. The first is Chromatic Orb spam — simply using orbs repeatedly until you hit the desired combination. This is efficient for on-color or nearly on-color setups but becomes extremely expensive for off-color configurations. The second approach is the Crafting Bench, which guarantees a certain number of specific socket colors for a fixed cost in Chromatic Orbs and Vaal Orbs.
